Streets For All

GVF partnered with the Borough of Phoenixville and North Coventry Township to implement the Streets for All Program. This partnership addresses Chester County’s recommendations for their Active Transportation Inventory (ATI) plan, as well as adopting the County’s Complete Streets Policy. The projects are funded by a Travel Options Program (TOP) Grant from DVRPC.
Components of the Streets for All program included a survey where respondents were asked to share their experiences with the current transportation infrastructure and identify potential areas for improvement, an educational campaign focused on multimodal road use, walking and biking audits, and culminating in a demonstration project in both municipalities. A press event and ribbon cutting was held in each municipality to celebrate the installation of the crosswalks.
The Streets for All project supports GVF’s belief that everyone should have safe and reliable transportation choices. A community’s infrastructure should support residents of all ages and abilities to make trips by walking or cycling- because it is convenient, affordable, and promotes a healthy lifestyle. When communities invest in sidewalks, bike lanes, trails, crosswalks, public transit, and other infrastructure it promotes transportation equity, improves public health, and reduces our carbon footprint.
"When the Phoenix Village project was completed in 2016, the Bridge Street corridor between Starr Street and Main Street was filled in with nearly 400 linear feet of new retail store and restaurant frontage together with the main entrance to 275 apartments. Immediately, the need for a safe mid-block crossing became apparent with so many residents and customers darting across Bridge Street and not wanting to walk 300-400 feet in either direction to get to an intersection crosswalk. With so many ongoing projects, the Borough simply could not move such a project up on its list of priorities. Fortunately, in 2022, we were contacted by GVF about the Streets-for-All Program. They conducted a needs assessment and submitted the grant application which got funded. If it were not for the partnership with GVF and the Streets-for-All Program, we would in all likelihood still not have this much needed and often used mid-block crossing." - Borough of Phoenixville Manager Jean Krack
"Through our partnership with GVF and support through the DVRPC TOP Program, North Coventry Township was able to examine needs and explore opportunities for right sized multi modal transportation improvements in our community through a public survey and educational campaign. The project culminated with the Township implementing a crosswalk demonstration project in South Pottstown which brought awareness to pedestrian and vehicular safety and effectively served as a catalyst for road and park infrastructure improvements now underway. GVF’s engagement with the Township has enabled our residents to have a voice in shaping public safety measures in their neighborhoods, and DVRPC’s support provided valuable tools to advance these goals." - North Coventry Township Manager Erica Batdorf
