Did you dump the pump?

Today marks national Dump the Pump day. Brought to you by the American Public Transportation Association, the goal of Dump the Pump day is to encourage the use of public transportation. With rising summer gas prices, everyone is looking for a way to save some green and public transit can be one way to save money. Working at a transportation management association, you would think I would have no problem showing my support and participating in Dump the Pump Day.
Unfortunately, I work in King of Prussia, and although we at GVF are working hard to bring a better level of access to the region, public transit is at best a second choice for most of the commuters in our area. It is not hard to see why. I live in Lansdale and commute to King of Prussia, that’s about twelve miles – usually takes around 40 minutes, not great, but not terrible. Now, if I were to take transit it would involve me utilizing a taxi, the 94 bus, train 541 towards center city, the 96 bus, and the 99 bus. With an estimated travel time of 2 hours and ten minutes, it’s just not practical- I don’t care how big of a transit advocate you are.
So what can a transit supporter do? Well for me I have been trying to utilize another transportation option- biking to work. While not directly supporting public transit I am still taking a vehicle off of the road and saving some money at the same time. Not to mention the physical benefits of riding to work and the sense of accomplishment I get doing it.
So if you are a transit supporter but are discouraged by not dumping the pump, I urge you to not give up, you may be able to benefit the transportation world in another way. Have you tried biking to work? What about carpooling? Telecommuting? There are many options available to commuters today and for our transportation network to excel we are going to need a mix of all of them.
